Martian Moons

Orbiting Mars are two natural satellites, or moons, known as Phobos and Deimos, both of which are twins who are sons of Ares(Mars). The notable features of both moons are that they are relatively small and irregular housing many craters each.

Phobos

Properties:

Mass: 1.0659*1016 kg

Radius: 11.2667 km

Semi-major Axis: 9376 km

Orbital Period: 7 hr 39.2 min(0.318 days)

Rotational Period: 7 hr 39.2 min(Synchronous with orbit)

Surface Gravity: 0.0057 m/(s2)

Etymology: Phobos(son of Ares)(personification of fear and panic)

Deimos

Properties:

Mass: 1.4762×1015 kg

Radius: 6.2 km

Semi-major Axis: 9376 km

Orbital Period: 1.263 days

Rotational Period:1.263 days(Synchronous with orbit)

Surface Gravity: 0.003 m/(s2)

Etymology: Deimos(son of Ares)(personification of dread and terror)
