Symbolism: the Archer
Babylonians associated Sagittarius with the god Nergal, a centaur-like being who employed archery heavily.
In Greek mythology, most believe that Sagittarius is a centaur using a bow. However, the identity of this archer is disputed. Many believe it is the centaur Chiron but others believe that Chiron is the Centaurus constellation. Similarly, some believed that Sagittarius was meant to guide the Argonauts in their quest to locate the Golden Fleece.
Sagittarius is home to many notable deep-sky objects. Many of them are open clusters and globular clusters. The Cat's Paw Nebula is also within Scorpio and it is known to create many stars.
Sagittarius is very notable because a significant portion of our Milky Way lies within this constellation. The Milky Way is densest near this constellation as the westernmost portion of it is the galactic center of the Milky Way. Because of this, Sagittarius is home to many of the Milky Way's star clusters and nebulae. Some of the nebulae within Sagittarius include the Lagoon Nebula, the Omega Nebula, the Trifid Nebula, and the Red Spider Nebula.
