Most cultures see Ursa Major as a (usually) female bear. In Roman myth, Jupiter, the king of the gods, falls in love with a nymph of Diana known as Callisto. Juno gets upset over this and finds out that Callisto has a child called Arcas. Juno decides to make Callisto a constellation so she can't continue making love with Jupiter. However, Arcas finds this bear and is about to kill her when Juno decides to make Arcas also a constellation. In doing so, she creates Ursa Major(Callisto) and Ursa Minor(Arcas). In Hinduism, Ursa Major is known as Saptarishi and Ursa Major was also considered a bear by Jewish peoples.
Ursa Major doesn't have many notable deep sky objects. However, it is home to many different galaxies within its boundaries. There aren't as many distinct star clusters and nebulae readily visible from Ursa Major but these are likely found within the several galaxies within the constellation.
