Taurus is known to represent a bull in most cultures. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, a notable Babylonian epic poem, the goddess Ishtar sends Taurus, the Bull of Heavens, to kill Gilgamesh. In Greek mythology, Taurus has been associated with many figures, one of them being Zeus, who was described to become a bull on multiple occasions in Greek myth. In Buddhism, legend claims that the Buddha was born during a full moon when the Sun was in Taurus. Thus, Buddha's birthday is celebrated on the first or second full moon when the Sun is in Taurus.
Taurus' brightest star is known as Aldebaran, an extremely luminous red giant. The supernova remnant Messier 1, better known as the Crab Nebula, can also be found in the northwest of Taurus. Lastly, Taurus is notable for its plethora of open clusters. An open cluster is a large group of stars that are born from the same molecular cloud so they have similar properties and age.
